Here at AFW, we believe in being a green company and reducing our carbon footprint. We work to minimize our environmental impact in a variety of ways, including: recycling in our warehouses, using efficient lighting in our stores and offices, and by using fuel-efficient trucks in our large fleet of delivery and over the road (OTR) trucks.

Recycling

AFW hauls waste generated from furniture packaging—including cardboard, plastic, and Styrofoam—to a recycling facility. In 2017, AFW recycled more than 6 million pounds of cardboard, nearly 600,000 pounds of plastic, and nearly 200,000 pounds of Styrofoam. This saved nearly 60,000 trees, more than 16.6 million Kilowatts of energy, more than 10,000 metric tons of CO2, nearly 22,000 barrels of oil, and more than 24.5 million gallons of water.

LED Lighting

We work to light our stores and corporate offices efficiently to reduce our power consumption. We use computer-controlled LED lighting and skylights on our show floors to ensure that they are beautifully lit while using less electricity. In our corporate offices, we use motion sensor switches to control lighting in rooms like bathrooms so that the lights are off when a room is unoccupied.

Efficient Trucks

Thanks to our commitment to cut down on our emissions and our fuel use, AFW has been a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® Transport Partner since 2011. All of our delivery trucks are equipped with air pollutant-reduction devices that help reduce fuel inefficiencies by 3,000 gallons per week. Our Kenworth tractors feature battery-powered night systems to heat and cool the sleeper compartment without idling the engine, using only 1¼ cups of diesel to heat the cabin for a night instead of the 7 gallons of diesel used by idling, which drastically reduces fuel use and carbon monoxide emissions. We also maximize the fuel efficiency of our fleet by using low rolling resistance (LRR) tires and improving the aerodynamics of our trailers through the use of air skirts.
